I saw this story today which relates to your question about the Bonapartes in New Jersey. Remember I mentioned Jerome Bonaparte's grandson having become US Secretary of the Navy. He actually had several posts and according to this article he founded the FBI (something I didn't know) Thought you might enjoy it:

Unfortonately, whenever you read about the FBI, it usually starts (and ends) with J. Edgar, and that's a shame because there have been good agents and they have done some great things over the years. Props to Charles Bonaparte, darts to J. Edgar.

It was news to me as well and as you may well surmise, I have read a little about the Bonapartes... At this point the family line is entirely extinct with the Bonaparte name. Some descendants are around from Napoleon's sisters but the male line died out in the 1940s in America. I wish I knew why their story has me so enthralled I have not been able to really study any other time period since 1992. Every time I try, I end up putting it aside and picking up on The Empire again. Since 92 I have probably only read 1/2 dozen books on other subjects. Notably presidential biographies.
